Is your team “all-stars”?
Denislava Simeonova, March, 2006

Seminar for managing a successful organization took the last week in Sofia, designed for managers of Bulgarian and foreign companies and business organisations. Instructor was Mr. Earl Sedlik, Harvard graduate and managing partner in the Seatle based organisation – Business Education for International Economic Development (BEIED). Earl Seldik has many years experience as manager and consultant. He is specialist in the area of marketing, business planning, finance and technologies and is an instructor in wide range master and bachelor degrees. In one of the seminar series he presented the “all stars theory” in the business organizations.

A new idea for human resources management is gradually enforcing in the business area. It concerns the “all stars team” theory, named on the “all-stars” teams, that attracts the best basketball and football players. Behind this stands the understanding that it is not enough only to attract people with talent and brilliant mind. Till now it was known that employing such people solves big part of the problems in the company. The new “stars” should have much more than good qualification to be reliable. Leadership, being initiative, intuition, and high effectiveness are among the necessary qualities. Besides their mind, they stand out with self confidence, self initiative and innovativeness.
According to Sedlik the “all stars” need is prompted by the fast economic development. The business should recognize the potential of these employees and develop it because these are “exceptional people who work more than the others to give more to the company“. They captivate the rest of the team and raise their spirit and motivation.

Who are the all stars?

Employees with the above mentioned characteristics exist on each level of the hierarchy. Usually they know all the colleagues and each detail of the work and the production process. The which unites them is that they can take many tasks at the same time and work simultaneously in several different spheres as well as compete the expectations raised to them. The most valuable thing for the employers is that these employees unite the team and motivate their colleagues, because they really want the company to succeed. Out of the company they are active in the social life and depending on their hobbies, they are teaching or are interested in arts.

How do we train stars?

The three main steps for the managers are to identify, train and keep the best in their team. A star could be found in each department of the company, but not every employee could become a star. The people who lack the potential stay on the executive level.

After we identify the stars the more difficult task is to motivate them to stay longer in the company. The motivation should be permanent process as well as the care for the development of the good employees through constant training.

Is the education important?

„Education is obligatory“, says Sedlik. „If you are experienced accountant in USA but you don’t have university degree, your salary will be 20 000 dollars lower“. It is not a problem if you have studied one thing and then you have decided to fulfill your potential in something completely different. Recently the Americans more and more often shift from one sector to another and this doesn’t bother the employers at all. „Those who choose to change their carrier are treated with respected. The companies only need clever and talented people with potential and desire for development“, concludes the business instructor.

Here are several advices that will help you develop your dream team:

To identify the best, give the whole team various tasks and projects and monitor closely how they deal with them.

The communication with the employees is of key importance – no matter your busy schedule, define time during the day when you will talk to them. Similar to growing up a child, it is not important how much time you spend together but how valuable information you will exchange for this time. Be good listener to learn about the problems of your subordinates.

Be positive, create atmosphere where the employees will feel fine.
Praise for well done work. Assess if the employees will value you doing that in front of the other colleagues or they prefer to share that only with them.

Don’t criticize in front of the whole team. Better do that eye to eye.

If, still at some point, the stars want to leave the company, you should understand and accept the fact that you can not keep them no matter what you do.

Don’t try to turn every employee into a star. Even if it sounds incredible, sometimes even a team that consists only of stars does not work successfully. It is more than enough just to have a look at how the football team Real Madrid is going on.
